What we collect
Account details you provide: email, username, password (stored encrypted, never in plain text), date of birth, gender, and optionally your country and city. Content you create: your profile photo, group chat messages, and any reports you file. Activity data: step count and walking/running distance, read from Apple Health with your permission. Device data: a push notification token so we can notify you, and brief device motion samples used only to detect obviously fraudulent step activity (see our Fair usage policy in the app).
What we don't collect
Stepper does not access your precise GPS location. Country and city are self-selected by you from a list, used only for regional leaderboards. We don't run advertising trackers or sell your data to third parties.
How we use your data
To run the core app: leaderboards, group challenges, chat, streaks, and the Wall of Fame. To keep the app fair: automated checks for implausible step activity, and human review of reported content. To communicate with you: account verification codes, password resets, and notifications you're eligible for (like a friend request or a broken record).
Who we share it with
Other Stepper users see what you'd expect from a social fitness app — your username, avatar, streak, and any public records or leaderboard placements, plus your messages in groups you're a member of. We use Supabase to host our database and backend, Apple for Health data access and push notifications, and Amazon SES to deliver account emails. None of these providers use your data for their own purposes — they process it only to provide their service to us.
Data retention
We keep your data for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account, your profile, activity history, messages, and records are permanently removed. Reports you've filed are kept for moderation integrity but have your identity removed from them.
Your choices
You can edit your profile details, control location/motion/photo/Health permissions from your device settings, and permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Delete account, inside the app.
Children's privacy
Stepper requires all users to be at least 16 years old and is not directed at children under that age.
Changes to this policy
If we make a material change to how we handle your data, we'll update this page and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
